As you may or may not know, I am a small business owner and I have an Etsy shop at Etsy.com. I do realize some people have never before heard of Etsy, so I want to take this opportunity to to explain this site to those of you who are in the dark. Etsy is a marketplace for small business owners like me who make hand-crafted items and for those who sell antique items. It is NOT for large commercialized companies like Walmart, Target, and the like. This is a place where you can find all sorts of things for almost anything you could ever want or need and yet so many people have never heard of it.
Well, back to my main point and the reason I am writing this post.
Saturday, November 30th is "Small Business Saturday" and I have been hearing radio ads asking shoppers to help support the small businesses rather than the large companies on that day. It got me thinking... Why just support the small businesses on one day of the year? As a small business owner, I know how difficult it is to find advertising space without having to pay crazy amounts that eat up your profits very quickly. I try very hard to keep my prices low & competitive so that I can get more customer base and build my business which means I don't profit much at all, and that leads to not much money left to advertise with. If other small business owners are like me, I figured I could try to help them in some way.
So I put out an offer to my fellow Etsians and we will see how it goes. I have offered to advertise for them for free here on my blog every Thursday, where the posts will be known as "Thursday Features" so that they can get their name out there without having to pay for it. It may help, it may not. All I am asking is that you look at the featured listings to see if anything might be something of interest to you, maybe something you were already interested in. Maybe you know someone who needs or was looking for something I am featuring? Just let them know that you found it!
My goal in this is to pay it forward in a way that I can. I know it probably isn't much, but I figure it is something and that is better than nothing. I know the thrill I get when an order comes through that I had no clue was coming, and if I can help that happen to someone else, I will do it. So from here on out, I will be featuring random listings from Etsy.com. I do recommend that you take a moment to stop by the site when you have time if you are looking for Christmas gifts and see if you can't find more personal gifts there than at your local retailer. I dare you!
